Noisy garage doors are annoying, but they can also be a sign that something is wrong. Common irritating noises are usually caused by vibrations and include grinding, rattling, and squeaking. You may even be able to hear your garage door operating while inside your home. Here are some tips to help you with this issue.
Tighten all nuts and bolts
Everything should be tightened on your garage door system. Sometimes loose pieces can be the source of annoying noises. Also, the vibrations that cause the sounds may also loosen the components until they come out. Be sure not to make things too tight, though.
Maintain all moving parts
This system in your home features a lot of components that need to move often. You will need to properly lubricate these to keep them functioning. You can use an oil or another safe lubricant to grease the springs first, making sure that the lubricant covers the entire spring. Other parts that will need to be well-lubricated include hinges, chains, and tracks. Lubricate the metal rollers if these are present.
Inspect the rollers
Speaking of rollers, these will require a more detailed inspection. If lubrication doesn’t help prevent noises, consider switching to nylon rollers. These should be replaced all at once. You can do it yourself, but it is often easier to hire a garage door repair company.
Check the insulation strip
If the insulation strip that stretches across the bottom of your garage door is worn down, it can be noisy when the door closes. Your garage will also be colder than normal and may get water damage. If your springs aren’t working properly, the door can be even louder.
To stop the noise from being too loud, you can simply replace the weatherstripping. This can be done by you or a professional. Just be sure to get the springs inspecting if they are the culprit, as these can cause even worse issues than annoying noises.
Take care of the rubber sound buffers
You can use rubber to help buffer sounds from the door and the opener. Before working on these parts, be sure to disconnect the motor. If you feel like working on the opener yourself (this isn’t recommended), remove and place the motor gently on your work surface. Next, you will need to remove the bolts from each side of the door and put rubber around the gaps. Even though this may sound easy, it can be complicated and time-consuming. This is another piece of maintenance you should leave to the professionals.
